Are you beautiful? It’s a simple question…
But did you just read past that question without answering?
Or, did you have to make up some logical conclusion such as “I’m not totally a lost cause, so I guess I might be able to call myself beautiful?”
Maybe you just quietly told yourself “no…”
This is one of the most important questions you could ask. Why is it so difficult to answer?
You aren’t alone. See what happened when we had 8 women look in the mirror and answer that same question. And hear what our Lead Weight Loss Coach Niki has to say about this question:
Our eight Altered! Wedding weight loss challengers in the video above are wonderful, loving, and accomplished women. They laugh and talk confidently about losing weight and winning the challenge in our previous Altered! episodes.
But everything changes when they talk to themselves in a mirror…
Some of them can’t even look themselves in the eye.
“Just to be a little slimmer, it would help everything.”
“I’ve given up on feeling really good about myself.”
“I constantly feel like people are judging me for the way I look.”
“I don’t feel as confident about myself.”
“I don’t want to be the bride’s fat mother.”
“When I walk into a meeting… [the] first thing they see is my weight.”
These are normal, beautiful women, but they talk about their bodies with shame— even after we tell them that we think they are beautiful.
Why can’t they see beauty in themselves?
So much anxiety surrounds our perception of beauty. When it should be your unique source of confidence, a glance in a mirror can too quickly reduce us to “I GIVE UP.”
When you don’t feel beautiful, you tend to pull back. You edit yourself. You hide your body and make stupid excuses. You give away your power. Basically, you are not fully showing up for your life.
This is impacting EVERYTHING —the jobs you apply for, your relationships, the friends you hang out with, and even whether or not you will lose weight.
Over the course of Altered!, we are going to give these ladies the power to change. To be strong, brave, and happy.
We want you to see that your body is not as bad as you think it is. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about being the best you can be in your own skin. The healthiest, strongest you. It’s about taking care of your body so you can take care of everything else in your life. It’s about looking in a mirror, and loving yourself.
If, like our Altered! challengers you’re struggling to answer the question above, you too are severely limiting your chances of weight loss success.
A study of 239 overweight women on a weight-management program over 12 months, found that eating behavior can be predicted by body image.1
The more negative your self-perception is, the less likely you are to lose weight.
BUT, the more positive your self-image is, the more likely you are to see the results.
There is a hidden person, a hidden belief about who you really are. It’s there.
So how do you find that person?
What if, even if you didn’t believe it, you told yourself every day that you are beautiful? That you are worth it?
You might not believe it at first… but you will in time. And as you look in the mirror, you will see less of a stranger and more of yourself.
You. Are full of beauty. You are beautiful.
P.S. Our Weight Loss Coaches did this exercise to show the women how damaging their self-perceptions are to their chances of success. They will do this exercise again during Altered… and we guarantee that you will be shocked. Stay tuned for more episodes to see their amazing transformations!
