Is Breakfast the Most Important Meal of the Day?

Is Breakfast the Most Important Meal of the Day?

Should you eat breakfast or skip it? When is the best time to eat breakfast? What if you’re not hungry in the morning?  Is breakfast really that important?

Actually…yes, breakfast is that important.

What time you eat is not as important as what you eat.

With breakfast, you are literally breaking a fast.  It is the first food that activates your digestive system after the overnight hours where you did not eat.

The first food you eat will have a big effect on your digestive system. It will set the stage for your cravings, energy and even moods for the rest of the day.

So it’s important to start your day with the right food. Let’s take a look at the best and worst breakfast foods.

Worst breakfast foods

A lot of people love breakfast food. What’s not to love? Pancakes, waffles, muffins, bagels, cereal…so many delicious choices. And so much bread and sugar!

Starting your day with these foods sets you up for a sugar roller coaster. You will likely find yourself craving more sugar, feeling hungry and crashing when the sugar high wears off.

Foods high in ingredients like high fructose syrup disrupt the brain’s “I’m full” hormones. So instead of feeling full, you find yourself hungry again.

In addition to the culprits listed above, beware of the following “healthy” breakfast foods.

Yogurt

Yogurt is supposed to be healthy for you, but it is loaded with hidden sugar.  Be especially wary of “low fat” yogurt. That’s where additional sugar can really sneak up on you.

Wheat bread

Sure, wheat bread is supposed to be better than white bread.  But even wheat bread can contain high fructose corn syrup.

Cereal bars

Even “healthy” cereal bars can be high in sugar, corn syrup, sugar cane and fructose.

Best breakfast foods

Set yourself up for a successful day by eating breakfast foods low in sugar and high in protein.

Eggs, meats, cheese, vegetables

These are foods high in protein and low in sugar. They give your body the fuel it needs. They make you feel full. By eating these foods after you “break your fast”, you start your day and your digestion on a healthy note.
