What is fasting?

Fasting is when you abstain from food for a certain period of time. For our program, we recommend doing a 24 to 48-hour clear liquid fast before starting your PTF meal plan. For this kind of fast, you won’t eat any food—but you can drink as many zero-calorie beverages as you like.

Is fasting safe?

Yes! For healthy people, fasting is a safe and beneficial thing to do. Our bodies are designed to go without food for short periods of time, and fasting has been practiced for thousands of years.

What are the benefits of fasting?

If you are uncertain about fasting or short on time. It’s quick, and easy to fit into your busy schedule. If you’re feeling good, you can always extend your fast to 48-hours.

What if I can't fast the whole time?

If at any point you feel you must break your fast early, then go ahead and start eating your PTF meals. Even the small fast you did will be a benefit to starting your weight loss program.

How do I fast?

Step 1: Decide if you will be doing a 24 or 48 hour fast.

Step 2: Pick a good day to start fasting. Ideally, it would be a day that you won’t be surrounded by food or alcohol, or required to do strenuous work.

Step 3: Before day one of your fast: stock up on your favorite zero-calorie fasting beverages. You’ll also want to make sure you have a PTF breakfast or eggs and/or breakfast meat to eat the morning of day one of your fast.

Step 4: The morning of day one of your fast: eat your PTF breakfast or have your eggs and/or breakfast meat.

Step 5: For the duration of your fast: consume clear liquid beverages with zero calories.

Step 6: Start your PTF meal plan after you have ended your fast. If you went the full 24 or 48 hours, your first meal will be a PTF breakfast or eggs and/or breakfast meat.

What can I have during my fast?

You can have any hot or cold clear liquid beverage that has zero calories. Caffeine is okay, as are non-caloric sweeteners and flavor enhancers.

Here are some ideas for what you can have:

  • Water
  • Sparkling water
  • Crystal Light
  • Mio
  • Coffee
  • Espresso
  • Iced coffee
  • Tea
  • Unsweet iced tea
  • Herbal teas
  • Diet sodas
  • Zero-calorie energy drinks
  • ero-calorie electrolyte drinks
  • Broth

If in doubt, read the label. If it has ‘0’ calories per serving, you can have it while fasting.

4 tips for a successful fast

  1. Carry your fasting beverages with you and sip on them throughout the day to ward off cravings.
  2. Stay well-hydrated during your fast to avoid feeling light-headed or nauseous.
  3. Sip on broth or a zero-calorie electrolyte beverage if you feel a little weak or unwell.
  4. Have a mug of warm broth if you tend to get hungry around meal times.

Can I continue to fast throughout my program?

Yes, you can continue to do clear liquid fasts throughout your program. There are two ways to do this.

Intermittent 24-hour fasts - can help keep your weight loss steady. You can do a 24-hour fast if you feel like you've plateaued. You can also do this kind of fast once a week if you have a lot of weight to lose, or will be doing PTF for more than 4 weeks.

Overnights fasts - are the easiest fasts you can do. Simply stop eating after your last meal of the day, and then eat breakfast 12-14 hours later the next day. This ensures your body is in fat-burning mode in the morning. You can overnight fast every night or as much as you like during your program.
